The best antivirus for Mac for most people is Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. It earned a perfect 6/6/6 in AV-TEST's June 2026 round. Norton is the pick if you want top detection scores, and Avast or AVG is the best free Mac antivirus.

Do You Really Need Antivirus on a Mac?
Yes. And I'm not saying that to scare you.
Your Mac has good built in defenses. But attackers have stopped fighting them head on. Instead, they trick you into opening the door. That's why Mac antivirus software matters more today than it did five years ago.
What macOS already protects you from
Your Mac ships with XProtect, Gatekeeper and System Integrity Protection. XProtect scans for known malware signatures.
Great for old threats.
But it can't reliably stop a brand new zero day threat. And a signed app looks "safe" to your Mac, even when it isn't.
What the 2026 numbers say
Look at the data. Moonlock's mid 2026 report found that adware is roughly 65% of detections. The infostealer Odyssey leads stealer detections at 62.7%. Over half of the malicious files it analyzed were digitally signed.
On top of that, Jamf's 2026 Security 360 report says trojans, infostealers, adware and unwanted apps make up about 90% of Mac attacks.
And ClickFix attacks, where you paste a malicious command into Terminal, are spreading through fake Mac utilities.
Many of these attacks start with a convincing message. If you want to spot them early, read my guide to the Geek Squad scam email and learn what a fake support message looks like.
Best Mac Antivirus Compared (Lab Results, 2026)
I don't trust marketing pages. So I only used independent lab data here.
AV-TEST tested nine home products on macOS Tahoe in June 2026. AV-Comparatives tested nine products against 1,500 real Mac malware samples in May 2026. Every consumer product caught 100% of the Windows samples, and none produced false positives.
Product | AV-TEST June 2026 (protection / performance / usability) | AV-Comparatives Mac malware | Mac PUA |
|---|---|---|---|
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac | 6 / 6 / 6 | 99.0% | 94% |
Norton | 6 / 6 / 6 | 99.9% | 95% |
Avast One Free | 6 / 6 / 6 | 99.9% | 95% |
AVG AntiVirus Free | 6 / 6 / 6 | 99.9% | 95% |
ESET | 6 / 5.5 / 6 | 99.9% | 94% |
Kaspersky Premium | 6 / 6 / 6 | 100% | 99% |
Intego ONE Complete | Not in this round | 96.7% | 94% |
One note: Avast, AVG and Norton share the same engine, so their scores look alike.
My Top Picks for Mac Antivirus Protection
Scores matter. But so do price, extras and how the thing feels day to day.
So here's how I'd choose, based on who you are.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac: best overall
Bitdefender is my pick for most people. It scored 6/6/6 at AV-TEST. It caught 99.0% of Mac malware at AV-Comparatives.
You also get ransomware protection, Time Machine backup protection, a browser extension and chat link scanning for apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Toolradar lists the first year price near $25 for one Mac. Confirm it before you buy.
Norton: best for top detection scores
Want the highest numbers? Look at Norton.
It hit 6/6/6 at AV-TEST, and its AntiVirus Plus product scored 99.9% on Mac malware. Gizmodo's tests also credit its phishing protection and full firewall.
Avast One and AVG: best free Mac antivirus
Budget tight? Fair enough.
Both free products scored 99.9% on Mac malware. That's remarkable for free antivirus software. The catch, per AV-Comparatives, is the upgrade pop ups.
Intego ONE: the Mac only option
Macworld ranks Intego ONE first for its Mac native design. But its 96.7% is the lowest consumer score in AV-Comparatives' test, and it doesn't block malicious websites. I'd pick Bitdefender first.
How to Set Up Your Mac Antivirus in 10 Minutes
Buying is easy. Setup is where people slip.
So follow these steps exactly. Grab your Mac, and let's go.
Download from the vendor's own site. Never use a cracked installer. Those spread infostealers.
Approve the system extension in System Settings after installing.
Grant Full Disk Access so the scanner sees everything.
Install the browser extension for web protection.
Run one full system scan to catch anything already hiding.
Turn on automatic updates for both your antivirus and macOS. Your browser needs the same care, so check the latest Chrome emergency update too.
Bonus rule: never paste a Terminal command from a website unless you trust it.
Mac Antivirus FAQ
Do Macs get viruses?
Yes. Mac malware is rarer than Windows malware, but it's real and growing. Moonlock reports that unique malicious macOS samples on VirusTotal grew roughly 40% year over year.
Is Apple's built in protection enough?
For careful users, it covers the basics. But signature scanning can miss new threats, and AV-Comparatives recommends adding certified antivirus, especially for non experts and anyone who often tries new apps.
What is the best free antivirus for Mac?
Avast One Free and AVG AntiVirus Free both scored 99.9% on Mac malware at AV-Comparatives. Expect upsell prompts.
Does antivirus slow down a Mac?
AV-Comparatives found no meaningful performance impact from any reviewed product. AV-TEST also gave most products a 6/6 for performance.
Is Bitdefender or Norton better for Mac?
Both earned 6/6/6 at AV-TEST. Norton scored higher on raw detection (99.9% vs 99.0%). Bitdefender adds ransomware and chat protection. Choose by features and price.
What if my phone is infected too?
Mac protection doesn't cover your phone. If you use Android, follow my guide on how to remove malware from Android.
My Verdict: Should You Buy Mac Antivirus?
Here's my honest take.
You lock your front door. You back up your photos. So why leave the laptop holding your banking, passwords and work with only basic protection?
A year of cover costs about what you'd spend on a couple of coffees a month. A single infostealer can drain cryptocurrency wallets and hijack your accounts.
That math isn't close.
So buy Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, or pick Norton if detection scores come first. Start with a free trial if you're unsure. Then run the ten minute setup tonight.
Your Mac deserves better than hope.
